Japan Will Tap Private Funds For Green-Energy Push: Kan(Nikkei)

DEAUVILLE, France (Nikkei)–Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Friday defended his goal for expanding the nation’s use of renewable energy and said he wants to mobilize private-sector money and know-how for this effort.

It is in no way impossible,” Kan told a news conference after the Group of Eight summit here, referring to his proposal to have more than 20% of Japan’s electricity come from renewable sources by early next decade.

“The first step is for many people to participate actively in this field,” he continued, saying he aims to pass legislation in the current Diet session on a power-purchasing plan to encourage the installation of home solar panels and other environmentally friendly means of producing electricity.
